Is the Forbes Top 50 Social Media List Flawed?

Is the Forbes Top 50 Social Media List Flawed?

Is the Forbes Top 50 Social Media List Flawed?

If you made the Forbes Top 50 Social Media Influencers list, you’re generally regarded as being pretty hot stuff. The Top 50 have a lot of influence, are extremely knowledgeable, and are connected to tens of thousands of people in their various networks.

If you didn’t make the list, you can tell yourself you were #51, or just try harder next year.

This year’s list was compiled by Haydn Shaughnessy using a “Pull Report” from PeekAnalytics.com.

There are also some basic criteria for involvement – experts must be creating their own content, and it has to be about social media. See more on the criteria here.

On the scoring, Peek Analytics gives people a score called Pull. If an individual has a Pull of 10x, that means that the audience the individual can reach is at least ten times greater than what the average social media user can reach.

Sounds pretty straightforward: if you’re a rockstar, you’ll be on the list.

Except it’s missing several notable names.

Jason Falls Jay Baer Chris Baggott 300x199 Is the Forbes Top 50 Social Media List Flawed?

Seriously, these guys didn’t make the list? Jason Falls (l), Jay Baer, Chris Baggott (standing)

According to Judith Gotwald on Social Media Today (25 Social Media Influencers Forbes Ignored (And Why)), the Forbes list has snubbed a lot of pretty influential people, including several who were on last year’s list: Jay Baer, Jason Falls, Gini Dietrich, Charlene Li, Brian Solis, C.C. Chapman (Forbes did include his Content Rules co-author, Ann Handley), and even Mitch Joel.

Of course, Forbes does include some of the names you would expect: Mari Smith, Chris Brogan (but not his Trust Agents co-author Julien Smith), Liz Strauss, Jeff Bullas, Scott Stratten, and Dan Schawbel (disclosure: I write for Dan’s Personal Branding blog).

So what’s up? What happened to the names you would normally expect to see? Did Shaughnessy forget them? Did the non-Forbes people drop off on their Pull? Was PeekAnalytics having a bad day?

Admittedly, many names on both lists are names you expect to see year after year on a Top 50 or Top 100 list, but many of these missing names are glaring in their omission.

I’d like to see some better explanations for the list, and who did and didn’t make it, and why/how. I’d love to hear some of that “inside baseball” talk to explain how he went about determining who to measure, and who not to. How did he come up with the names to check? Is Pull based entirely on followers and reach, or is more like Klout, which could give a person with a very small following a high score because they the followers interact frequently? Or did Shaughnessy want to give some new people a shot at being on the Forbes Top 50? That’s admirable if it’s true, but then the list isn’t accurate or reflective.

It’s not that I’m suspicious of Forbes’ list, or will reject it out of hand, like it’s some partisan wing-nut website. It’s just that the exclusion of several noted social media experts is, well, eyebrow-raising, to say the least.

At the very least, Forbes’ list will be seen as problematic, which can be fixed with some basic explanations. At the worst, it’s a flawed list that is seriously lacking in its execution. I can’t wait to see what happens next.

Olympic Coverage on NBC?

I miss the good ole days.

The good ole days of Communist Hungary. You may be thinking,”are you crazy??!!!” Well, no, I am not.

Olympics on NBC

Back in 1980 when the US boycotted the Moscow Olympics, I got to watch them commercial free when I was visiting relatives in Hungary. I always loved the Hungarian announcers because they called the events with some humor and excitement. We were watching a rowing event and the announcer is calling positions and says to the Hungarian crew, “Hurry up Tamas!” It just struck me as funny because I don’t think we would ever hear one of our announcers inject some humor like this.

Today, it just seems that the Olympics on NBC’s stations is one big commercial. Why do I say this? Well, let’s take events with running clocks. Everyone knows I am a big soccer fan. So, I am spoiled because we watch our games commercial free for 45 minutes. You can’t watch the game any other way. It’s a running clock. So, I was shocked to see that NBC slotted commercials into the game.

Then, I was watching women’s field hockey. The US Women were playing Germany. They too operate on a running clock. It was a very good game. The US were down 2-0. In the 2nd half, they were doing all they could to get back into the game. So, as the game was heating up, NBC goes into commercial. Wouldn’t you know, the US scores to pull one back to 2-1 DURING THE COMMERCIAL! That just pissed me off.

Now, I understand that NBC is paying a lot of money to broadcast and they have to fill up inventory to earn a profit on their investment. But seriously! What ever happened to the actual sport of it all? It would be interesting to see how much time is given to commercials in an hour of broadcast of a sporting event. I guess that could be one of my personal goals in the coming days.

I still miss the good ole days when the sport was the focus of the Olympics, not the commercials that cloud them.

Muslims help thwart terrorist attacks

paul lorinczi thinking about something

The Christian Science Monitor wrote a piece on pointing out that Muslims have been the ones helping our intelligence communities stop the recent terrorist threats against targets. The article details out the story of a former Guantanamo Bay prisoner that provided the details on the printer cartridge bomb attempts.paul lorinczi thinking about something

In all cases, the intelligence gathered was from Muslims themselves.

The lesson for me is to remind myself that all societies has its fringe elements intent on causing troubles for the rest of us. Everyday,  we read in the paper about some whacko in this country that takes guns to schools, post offices and federal buildings.

Like some Christians, every religion has its groups that take themselves to0 seriously at the expense of others. In light of the instability in the world today, no society is immune to having extreme views that result in some violent attack against others.

Islamic Terrorist Attack Sweden

Confused why Radical Islamic people live in the west

An Islamic radical born in Iraq and emigrated to Sweden as a child attempted to detonate a suicide bomb in Stockholm. He did not like a newspaper caricature of Mohammed, so he decided to kill himself and tried to kill others in the process. Good news, he failed at killing others.Confused why Radical Islamic people live in the west

I don’t get it. If you are having a hard time justifying your Islamic beliefs in a culture seemingly counter to those beliefs, just GO HOME! Leave Germany, Sweden, Britain, the Netherlands, the United States. Go back to the Middle East! Go back to Pakistan. Go back to your country where everyone is like you. Speak Arabic every day. Drink tea and coffee. Wear robes. Do what you do in your own countries that make it so much better than your host country.

That’s right. Just go home to where you came from.

“Better people!
Better Food!
Better Beer Tea?

Why move around the world, if Eden was so near” Neil Peart – Territories

There is an old saying, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.” If you have made a decision to move to another country, there is a certain amount of conformity that goes with it. First and foremost, you must obey the laws of the land in which you now live. If you want to change them, you can become a citizen, vote, or participate in the political process to influence change.

Second, you have to learn the primary language that is spoken. In the United States, English is the primary language spoken here both civic and commercial. You can speak your own language no problem. Just understand that to be understood, you will have to learn English. Everyone who has come to this country before you has.

Third, most open societies tolerate all religions. (This is not true because your people are protesting the Mosque in NYC). This is true. The problem is, we keep reading in the newspapers that radical Muslims keep trying to kill Americans, Brits, Swedes, Danes, Salman Rushdie and even the South Park creators. The fear is this radicalism will find its way here. We don’t want it. It’s like Islam is the nerdy guy in the room that takes himself way too seriously.

Radical beliefs in all forms are dangerous. It’s a form of narcissism in the name of something else. Suicide is a selfish act. It is not a benevolent act in the eyes of your God, my God, his God, or the other guys God. it is a selfish act. It’s a cop out.

So, if you are a Muslim struggling with life in Europe or the United States. If you feel that your religious beliefs are incongruent to the decadent ways of those in the west. GO HOME!
