B2B Social Media and Lead Generation

urlbox

Can B2B social media or B2C social media generate leads for you?

That is the question most marketers are asking themselves today. B2B Social Media and B2C Social Media is a completely different animal than traditional media. With Generation Y now exceeding baby boomers in population, social media campaigns are will be more important than ever.

Lead generation is a critical part of marketing, in fact – it’s why we market in the first place.

In the past, you might have bought a few radio spots, sent out some direct mail cards, held a contest or even made a few phone calls. And yes, a few people might have responded. You’d then send them some more information or an email hoping to keep that spark of interest alive along with your potential sale.

Take a jewelry store in my area for example. I recently made an inquiry there about having a custom piece of jewelry made for my wife. Over the last three weeks, I received three small catalogs, a pamphlet in the mail, and three emails all trying to sell me mass-market jewelry. Where does it end up? The trash.

Why? What’s changed?

The New Way – Social Media For Business

What that jewelry store doesn’t know is that the world has moved on to a new method of lead generation – one that focuses on empowering the customers to make their own decisions and building relationships. Basically, being there and communicating with your potential or existing customers before the sales process ever begins.

Seth Godin calls it Permission Marketing. Hubspot calls it Inbound Marketing. Others call it Pre-Relationship Marketing (taking on the concept of building the relationship before you market). You can call it whatever you want.

The old ways involved beating your potential customers over the head with information, sales drives and an aggressive sales force. Now, it’s about letting your customers find you and empowering them to make their own decisions.

How Do You Do It?

Use the web. It’s the easiest way to start conversations with your potential customers, build those relationships and be there before a sale ever happens.

A blog lets you inform, Twitter keeps you in contact, social networks like Facebook or LinkedIn let you connect with people and niche message boards give you fast access to your target group – it’s beautiful.

So, let’s go back to that jewelry store example. While researching custom-designed jewelry, I also came across an independent artist working in my area. She had an Etsy site, a Facebook profile and a regularly updated blog with pictures of her past custom work and tips on planning a custom design. Not only was it informative and easily found, it was approachable. Who do you think I hired?

Converting the Lead to a Sale

Of course, converting those online relationships (or “leads”) into a sale is a whole other ball game. Just because someone comments on your blog, that doesn’t mean they’re going to buy your product.

So, how do you take those wide-funnel sales opportunities and turn them into hard, concrete sales? Do you focus on one-on-one communication? Or do you think it’s all a waste of time?

What are your thoughts on the new style of online lead generation?

Social Media Management of your Campaign

Time to Manage our Social Media Campaign

Social media campaigns need management.  Now that we have selected our b2b social media networks, we now have to figure out the social media management of networks.

In the previous post we outlined a few things to consider when choosing social networks to participate in. Now that you’ve made your choices, it is time to manage them.

Step 2: Managing Your Social Networks

To start, you’ll have to manually add all of your profile information. You can begin with the basics and fill each of these out over a period of time. Ideally, you want to be updating all of your social profiles about once a month. As you get involved with each social network you will see what type of profile information is necessary to attract the best relationships.

Try making a spreadsheet of all your social networks. Your column headers should be the social network name and URL, your user name, password and finally, the last date of update. It will help you stay on track of all of your profiles.

TIP: Be sure your profiles are similar on each network you choose to participate in. People are leery of chameleons who have a different “facade” in each community. Also, I think it is important to get connected to services that essentially become “profile aggregators” like Disqus, Gravatar, BackType and coComment. These services collect your various presences, show how actively and intelligently your social participate is and are quickly becoming important as credibility tools.

Now, here are some tools you can use [Read more...]

Are you using Linkedin effectively in your Social Media campaign?

SN reviews

Is Linkedin a part of your social media marketing campaign?

One of the best social media marketing tools out there is Linkedin. It is a little tricky to learn how to use, but once you do, you can make connections and built a reputation online with like minded people and prospects. With Linkedin, you will find the people you need to connect with are there. Before you do, consider some of these ideas on how to best participate:

Don’t: Use Your Work or Primary Home Email as Your Public Email
Get a Gmail, Yahoo or Hotmail account, unless you really like spam with your email. LinkedIn provides some protection to your email address, but it does give your email to first degree connections and the owners of groups you join.

Do Understand How LinkedIn Search Works
LinkedIn has millions of users.  LinkedIn’s search system is critical because it is what helps you find people and what powers the “people you may know” tool. The search tool is limited to:

  • First level connections – your friends.
  • Second level connections – your friend’s friends.
  • Third level connections – your friend’s friends friends.
  • People in groups with you
  • A random sample of the rest of the database – and you do not get to see names.

In short: the more connections you have, the easier is to find people you are not connected to.

Do Have a Strategy
Quantity over Quality
The idea here is to connect with as many people as possible so you have access to as many LinkedIn users as possible. This generally means accepting connections from anyone who wants to connect with you.  If you are a marketer, serial networker or recruiter, then the quantity should trump quality.

Quality over Quantity
If you don’t need max our your visibility of LinkedIn’s database, then the best way to use LinkedIn is to focus on quality. Connect with people that you know or who have a reason (beyond being a prospect) to know you.  If you do purue quality, you should connect with a few “superconnectors” (people with thousands of connections) to gain access to more people in LinkedIn’s database.  It will be very hard to find people you know if you only can see 23,000 people compared to 453,000 people.

Do: Join groups
Groups allow you to find people with simmilar interest quickly.  Joining in discussion is a great way to meet new people.

Don’t Spam Groups
On LinkedIn there are two kinds of spam: blatant self promoting advertisements and blatant attempts to get more connections.  Take a minute to look at a discussion group before your post a message and make sure the group has posts like the one you want to make.

Do: State that you are open to connections if you are.
If you want to grow your network quickly, tell people that you are an “open networker,” or even become a LION (LinkedIn Open Networker).

Don’t break Outlook with your fabulous name.
LinkedIn allows people to download their freinds and their friend’s email addresses.  If you make a fancy name like “>>>Bob “The NetworkGuru” Smith<<<” it will make a first impression.  But the second impression will be that you can’t be found in outlook because your first name doesn’t start with “>” it starts with “B.”

Pay per Click or Search Engine Optimization?

Keys - search engine optimization or pay per click

Search Engine Optimization consultants will often tell you that it is the only way to go. For the best results in online traffic,  Search Engine Optimization usually is. After all, 89% of the traffic on the front page can get clicks. Pay per Click can see a smaller click through rate on impressions. But that does not mean that SEO is the be all, end all. LIke anything, it may or may not be better to do SEO over PPC over Affiliate Marketing over Business Blogging and Social Media. The reality is every company and market is very different. Some of the niche markets are very competitive and require both to be done. If you are getting traffic from PPC, it is not recommended to get rid of it completely.

The thought process around PPC vs. SEO makes the assumption that PPC and SEO are zero sum game where a click to a natural link is the same person that would have clicked on a paid link. BAD ASSUMPTION. The math doesn’t add up. Canceling one source of traffic may save money, but it will not result in growth. Why? Because at the end of the day, if you are getting 10,000 visits from PPC, then add 10,000 visits from seo, you are getting 20,000 visits.

PPC (10,000) + SEO (10,000) > SEO (10,000)

Any way you cut it, stopping PPC just because you are successful with SEO doesn’t necessarily result in anything other than losing your PPC traffic. The question is, will stopping PPC because of SEO success really help you? Most likely here’s what happens:

  • The quality of your traffic goes up or down a little bit.
  • You lose the traffic PPC contributes. Despite what a lot of SEOs claim, you get what you pay for in traffic. Free traffic isn’t always good traffic.
  • Your sales probably will go down at least a little bit.
  • Your boss, who learned his lesson when he killed the yellow pages when a radio campaign got leads for cheaper will either fire you or get to teach you a marketing lesson.

That’s it. Oh, and if you use content networks (ads on non-search websites) with Google, killing your PPC will 100% certainly result in reduced sales. Which brings me to Mike’s Law of Marketing:

NEVER EVER BUY INTO A CAMPAIGN WHERE WE ARE USING A SMALLER SAMPLE OF THE SAME MARKET AND COUNTING ON HAVING A BETTER CONVERSION RATE.

Why is this true? Because at the end of the day, if you don’t change the makeup of the market (i.e. better targeted demographics, change keywords) you rarely will get better sales. Why? Because your market is a big part of dictating your conversion rate. The old replace PPC with SEO scam usually breaks Mike’s Law: you aren’t changing your market – people still find you for the same keyword, except you shrunk your market because those PPC ads ran all the time, and on more sites than just Google’s search engine!

The Secret To Effective Business Blogging

A diet rich in soy and whey protein, found in ...

Image via Wikipedia

Seems like most business blogs are like dieting…

Everyone has made a commitment to get the corporate blog going and the focus is very strong the first month on the business blog. The check off each day that a blog post is written and eagerly await the traffic numbers to see how it is doing. Then, one day, someone leaves a comment on a post like, “Interesting very to me, I thank you for interesting article.” (Little do they know, the person has added linking code to their post to generate back links to their site – that’s another blog post).  Getting that first comment is like losing those first couple of pounds on a diet.

But then something goes terribly wrong:

First, it gets harder and harder for the business to spend time on the blog. And after about a month, everyone wants it to work, but the spark just isn’t there. And so instead of posting daily, the business starts posting every few days, then every few weeks and about 90 days into the relationship, both sides realize they don’t love each other anymore and the relationship is on the rocks. Which begs the question, “What went wrong?”

Usually, what goes wrong with a business blog is that the team of bloggers either runs out of time, energy or ideas to turn into quality blog posts.

Blogging ROI is off the charts, especially if you blog effectively. In other words, you have to have something meaningful to say and do so every day. You see, blogs don’t work like static websites. The more you post, the more reward the blog provides:

1. Search engines add and drop blog articles faster. You go to the top faster, and you go away faster. Consistent, regular posts yield consistent, top rankings on search engines.

2. Other bloggers read your blog for ideas. Then they write posts referencing yours, increasing your blog’s audience. But they don’t see your ideas unless they show up in their RSS reader.

3. Social networks deliver traffic, but only if you have something that changes. No blog posts equals no changes equals no traffic from your social media initiative. More posts means more friends clicking to see what you’ve posted for them.

So, what do you do if you don’t see your blog though soft focus lenses anymore? Don’t give up. Either redouble your efforts to blog effectively or get some help.

See, your relationship with your blog isn’t a human one. Your blog won’t know the difference between you and a stand in ghost writer. Your girlfriend or boyfriend will.

Top Five Tag Myths

Quick Tech Primer
If you are going to write a business blog, it is important to learn about Tags and Categories when setting it up. If you are not paying attention to your tags and your categories, you could be missing important benefits of how to use them. Business blogs require an understanding that you are reaching two audiences when writing, they include:

1. The Reader

2. The Search Engines

Tags play important part to reach both, but you have to understand how to use them.

Tag Myths, Tag Facts

Myth: Tags are used for  making blogs easy to navigate.
Fact: Tags are single words (you can do more than one word, but most people don’t because using quotes is a nuisance for Del.icio.us users) for providing hints for social bookmark sites. Tags are used to help users of sites like Del.icio.us or Technorati.com quickly categorize your website. Organizing your site by tag probably is a good way to make the site make little sense.

Myth: Tags and Keywords are the same thing.
Fact: Keywords are used to make your site easier to search. Tags are used as organization hints for social bookmark users. Sometimes your tags and keywords are the same thing. Most of the time, though, keywords tend to make more sense to humans and tags tend to be a collection of words. For example: your keyword is “SARBOX compliance software” your tags should be “software sarbox accounting sarbanes-oxley”. Oh, and long tail tags don’t really work that well.

Myth: You should select tags the same way you select keywords for your website.
Fact: Tags are used to categorize bookmarks on sites like Del.icio.us. People do not use tags the same way as keywords – they use them to indicate broad topics or emotions instead of specifics. Your tags should make it easy for someone to quickly categorize your article in their links, not as some kind of tool for telling Google what your site is about. Take a look at Del.icio.us and look what tags people are assigning to links there – you’ll be amazed how broad the tags are.

Myth: Tags should be part of my search engine optimization strategy.
Fact: Using tags to game Google for higher search position is probably not going to work out for you. Most short single word keywords are incredibly difficult to optimize for and Google has been on to tag stuffing and other third rate SEO trickery for several years. On top of that, users of social bookmarking sites will simply create their own tags if they don’t like yours.

Myth: Tags are a waste of time.
Fact: There are millions of users of sites like Digg.com, Del.icio.us and Technoriati.com. Users of these sites share bookmarks (read, their bookmark of your website) with their friends. And they can have 534,391 friends they share with. On top of that, Google and other search engines seem to smile on sites that come up often in social bookmark sites.

Blogging Tool Roundup

Business Blogging can have its own personality. Have you considered taking a look at what your online business blog personality is translating to be in Myers-Briggs vernacular? Well, I am not going to say this is totally accurate, but it is fun nonetheless. Go ahead and try it.

Personality Type Your Blog, Metrics and Terrorists

  • What Meyers-Briggs personality type is your blog? Don’t know?  Try the Typealyzer. Then see if it matches with your actual Meyers-Briggs personality type with this quick test.
  • Making blogs measurable is difficult. That’s why this article on 20 Blog Analytics Tools is a must read.
  • Over the last week Twitter delivered the best coverage of the Egypt Protesters. That’s right, this Twitter.  Why? Real time commentary from people who are where the action was.  Hmm… sounds like a tagline.

Business blogging is not as complicated as most think it should be. Often, I hear prospective clients ask, “why would anyone want to follow us?” For a lot of reasons when you are business blogging. Also, be sure to check out the bonus 3 at the bottom of the list.

Business Blog Essentials

1. The purpose of every blog post/page is clear to visitors.

2. A homepage that clearly conveys the blog’s offerings & purpose.

3. Easy to find breadcrumb navigation.

4. Obvious links. (Underlined Links are what we have been using for years. Don’t reinvent the web.)

5. Copy (content) written for the general public. (3rd-5th grade level)

6. All options and next steps are obvious.

7. Free of any wording or imagery that is unnecessary, confusing or distracting.

8. Consistent with icons, buttons, menus and links. (Make sure they look and work the same no matter what.)

9. A site wide search feature which logs search queries.

10. A short sales funnel which tells people what they are getting, what it costs and how to buy it.

11. A “printer friendly” link for content or a style sheet for print media so pages look good on screen and off the printer.

12. Quality assurance system to fix broken links, spelling errors and other items.

Bonus: Three Deadly Mistakes

Not putting descriptive titles and alt tags on pictures and links.
Failing to do so means search engines and people with visual impairments may not be able to use your site.

Reinventing the web.
Make your website look like a website and not like a high end print brochure.

Forgetting that some people have slow connections.
There are a lot of users in offices where the shared T1 is slow or who have an old-fashioned modem at home.

Four Fixes For High Bounce Rates on your business blog

Business Blogging can generate traffic and roi for efforts if done correctly. There are four major reasons your business blog‘s bounce rate may be high.

1. Bad Traffic – People aren’t looking for or expecting what they get when they enter your blog.

2. Too Complicated – People get lost because there’s too much going on and it’s not easy to see where to start.

3. Poor Performance – Slow loads, error messages, unprofessional content, etc…

4. WTF – Visitors arrive at your homepage or blog post page and promptly say “WTF!” because the page is unorganized, off-topic, cluttered, etc.

Fixing each reason is easy, just follow these tried & tested tips…

Bad Traffic

How to Identify
Check how much traffic is being sent by weak advertising programs like directed traffic (people who are forced to go to your site), pop-under ads and unrelated paid search ads. If there’s a lot, you may want to re-think these programs. Look at your site statistics package’s search keywords report. If they are unrelated to your site, you’ve found the culprit.

The Fix
Make sure that links and traffic sources match the message on your page. In other words, create headlines and excerpts that succinctly describe the blog post and make sure any anchor text links used in blog promotion efforts accurately reflect the content of the referenced blog post or page.

Too Complicated

How to Identify
This one is hard to diagnose because your blog probably seems simple to you. You’ve got a homepage, a blog page and regular pages, right? Not exactly… You also have archive pages, author pages, tag pages, sidebar items (widgets), and perhaps a few other types of pages depending on your theme. So, what to do?
The Fix
Fixing a complicated page requires you to identify and eliminate unnecessary options, widgets, links, graphics, and aesthetics. Look at your blog’s page structure & navigational system from the perspective of your reader. Give them what they want easily and quickly.

Poor Perfomance

How to Identify
Use a free service such as Google Webmaster Tools to identify broken links, slow loading pages and other potential errors which detract from visitor experience. Or, make sure your browser is set to show page load activity. Then, go through each section of your blog, each type of page, and watch the bottom of your browser to see if there is something that has to load which slow down page load time.

The Fix
Once you have identified the page loading problems, whether it is a poorly written widget or a over coded header.php, get someone who knows CSS and pHp to change the code and speed things up. If Google Webmaster Tools identifies lots of broken links, get to work redirecting those links.

WTF Factor

How to Identify
Of all the problems, this is the hardest one to overcome and the most common. Why? Because many business blogs are crafted by a staff that is either overworked or under-trained (or both) and assume that their blog is easy navigate and their content is sufficient. Here’s how to identify WTF problems in four simple but probably painful steps:

The Fix
1. Have someone you trust read a few of your key posts & pages out loud.
2. Ask them, “What do you think this page or post is about, what would you do next?”
3. Allow them to navigate the blog and notice if they can find the content they are looking for.
4. Let them debrief you with an honest appraisal of your business’ blog and be willing to listen.
